Travel eSIM: keep WhatsApp and your home number
Keep WhatsApp, iMessage and your home number on a travel eSIM without roaming fees: exact iPhone and Android settings, SMS codes and Wi-Fi Calling.

Yes: you can keep WhatsApp and your home number while a travel eSIM carries your data, because WhatsApp is registered to your phone number, not to the SIM that provides the internet connection. The setup that avoids roaming fees is simple: leave your home line switched on for calls and texts, pick the travel eSIM as the only line for mobile data, turn off Data Roaming on the home line and turn off automatic data switching.
This guide gives the exact settings on iPhone (iOS 26), Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, explains what still costs money on the home line (incoming calls, mostly), how to keep receiving bank codes by SMS, when Wi-Fi Calling helps, and what to do if your phone can only run one eSIM at a time. Every rule and price comes from Apple, Google, Samsung, WhatsApp, the EU or the carrier's own page, read on 27 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- WhatsApp keeps your number and chats on travel eSIM data: you don't need Change number in WhatsApp for a trip, a feature that moves your account to a different number.
- Home line ON for calls/SMS, travel eSIM for Cellular Data, Data Roaming OFF on the home line, Allow Cellular Data Switching OFF: that blocks home-carrier data charges, but answering a call on the home line can still be billed.
- Received SMS are free on AT&T (they don't trigger the $12 Day Pass) and on Three in Go Roam destinations; check your own plan, and enable Wi-Fi Calling before you fly.
Does WhatsApp keep working on a travel eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp only uses your phone number when it checks that the number is yours: it sends a 6-digit code by SMS or by a phone call. After that, the app needs an internet connection, and it does not matter whether that connection comes from Wi-Fi, your home SIM or a data-only travel eSIM. Your chats, groups and contacts stay on the same number.
Two things to know, both from the WhatsApp Help Center:
- WhatsApp can ask for a code again, for example if you reinstall the app or move to another phone. Abroad, WhatsApp says you may have trouble receiving that code because of roaming, that turning roaming on may let the SMS or call through but can cost extra, that the "Call me" option may leave the code on your voicemail, and that if you added an email address to your account, a re-registration code can be sent by email. Add that email before you leave, and don't reinstall WhatsApp on the trip.
- Do not use Change number. WhatsApp's Change number feature moves your account to a different number. It is not needed for a trip, and a travel eSIM usually has no number of its own, or a foreign one.
The same logic applies to iMessage and FaceTime: Apple says that if you use only your travel eSIM, "FaceTime and iMessage will continue to work on your home line".
iPhone setup (iOS 26): home number for calls, travel eSIM for data
You need an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later, unlocked (Settings > General > About: "No SIM Restrictions" next to Carrier Lock). Install the travel eSIM before you leave: see when to install a travel eSIM and how to activate an eSIM on iPhone.
Option A, the iOS 26 prompt. When you land, iOS 26 can show Turn On Travel eSIM. Apple's travel page then offers Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM. Choose the second to keep receiving calls and texts on your home number. Apple warns that keeping both lines on may still incur roaming fees on the home line, which is why you check the settings below.
Option B, manual setup (labels from Apple's Using Dual SIM with an eSIM page):
- Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data). Under SIMs, check that both your home line and the travel eSIM are on. Give them clear labels via Cellular Plan Label (for example "Home" and "Travel").
- Tap Cellular Data and select the travel eSIM. Apple: "One number at a time can use cellular data."
- On the same screen, turn Allow Cellular Data Switching OFF. When it is on, Apple says the iPhone can use data from both plans "depending on coverage and availability", and the voice line switches to voice and data during a call.
- Back in Settings > Cellular, tap your home line > Cellular Data Options and turn Data Roaming OFF (path from Apple's data roaming page). Then tap the travel eSIM > Cellular Data Options and turn Data Roaming ON: most travel eSIMs need it.
- Set the default line for calls and texts to your home number, and in iMessage and FaceTime choose your home number. Apple: "Choose which cellular plans you want to use for iMessage and FaceTime."
- Check: open Safari on mobile data. If pages load and the home line still shows the foreign network's name, you are set.
Side effects Apple lists: with Data Roaming on for the data line, the voice-only line loses Visual Voicemail and MMS (photo texts). If you are on a call on one line, a call to the other goes to voicemail unless that carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling, and you won't get a missed-call notification for it. Back home, iOS 26 can switch the travel eSIM off and the home SIM back on automatically depending on your country; if not, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure Turn On this Line is enabled for your home line.

Android setup: Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy
Google Pixel
Google says a Pixel 3a or later can use two SIMs (one SIM card plus one eSIM), and a Pixel 7 or later can use two eSIMs at the same time if the carrier allows it. Some of these steps need Android 11 or later.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Make sure both SIMs are switched on.
- Under Your primary SIMs, set Calls and Texts to your home SIM, and Mobile data to the travel eSIM.
- Turn Automatic data switching OFF (on Pixel 8 and earlier the related option is Data during calls). Google notes that on Pixel 8a and later this switch is also needed to use both SIMs for calls at once, so leave it off unless you rely on that.
- Tap your home SIM and turn Roaming OFF; tap the travel eSIM and turn Roaming ON. This per-SIM path (Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > SIM name > Roaming) is the one shown in Vodafone's Pixel device guides.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung's US support page describes an eSIM used "alongside a physical SIM" and doesn't state how many eSIMs can be active at once, so check on your model in SIM manager. The menus (no One UI version is named on Samsung's pages):
- Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager (called SIM card manager on some models). Turn both SIMs on.
- Under Primary SIM (or Preferred SIMs), set Calls and Text messages to your home SIM and Mobile data to the travel eSIM.
- If you see an automatic data switching option in SIM manager, turn it off.
- Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming (Samsung UK). On dual SIM phones, make sure roaming is off for the home SIM and on for the travel eSIM; where your model shows a single switch, it applies to the data SIM.
Other Android brands use similar menus with different names. Our Android eSIM activation guide covers installing the profile itself.
What still works on the home line: SMS, bank codes and calls
Turning off Data Roaming only stops mobile internet on the home line: Apple describes it as the setting that "permits internet access over a cellular data network" abroad. The line itself stays connected to a partner network, so it can still receive texts and calls. That is what you want for one-time passwords from your bank, airline or government apps. It is also why the home line can still cost money.
| On the home line, abroad | Usually | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Receiving an SMS (bank code, OTP) | Free on many plans | AT&T: received texts don't trigger the Day Pass; Three UK: free in Go Roam destinations |
| Sending an SMS | Charged or triggers a daily pass | Verizon and AT&T count sent texts as usage |
| Answering a call | Often charged per minute outside the EU | Three UK: Β£1.25 or 99p a minute outside Go Roam destinations |
| Mobile data | Blocked if Data Roaming is off | Background updates can start a pass if it is on |
Practical rules for the trip:
- Let codes arrive by SMS, but don't answer unknown calls on the home line; let them go to voicemail or call back on WhatsApp.
- Before you leave, switch the 2-factor method of your important apps to an authenticator app or in-app approval where your bank offers it. Then a missing SMS doesn't lock you out.
- If you turn the home line off completely, you pay nothing, but SMS codes will not reach you until you turn it back on.
Wi-Fi Calling abroad: which carriers allow it
Wi-Fi Calling routes your home-number calls and texts over the internet. On iPhone it is in Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling; with two lines, Apple says you first pick the line, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. Apple's dual SIM page also says a call to your other number can be answered during a call only if that carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling.
Whether it works abroad, and at what price, is the carrier's decision:
- Verizon: its Wi-Fi Calling FAQ says "Calling back to the US is free"; calls to other countries are billed at international rates. iPhones must be on Verizon's network in the US to turn Wi-Fi Calling on and can't turn it on outside the US: activate it before you fly.
- AT&T, T-Mobile, EE, O2, Vodafone UK, Three: we could not confirm their current rules for Wi-Fi Calling from abroad on a page we could read on 27 October 2026. Ask your carrier, or test it on hotel Wi-Fi with a short call to a friend.
Even without Wi-Fi Calling, WhatsApp calls, FaceTime Audio and iMessage work over any data connection, including the travel eSIM, at no cost on your home bill.
What accidental roaming costs (US and UK carriers)
Accidental roaming usually comes from one of three slips: Data Roaming left on for the home line, Cellular Data still set to the home line, or automatic data switching kicking in during a call. Some carriers then charge a whole daily pass, not a few megabytes. Prices read on the carriers' pages on 27 October 2026:
| Carrier | What a slip costs | What triggers it |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T International Day Pass | $12 a day for one line, $6 for each extra line; max 10 daily fees per line per bill | Talking, texting or using data that day; received texts don't count |
| Verizon TravelPass | $12 per line per day ($6 in Mexico and Canada), plus taxes | Making or receiving calls, sending texts, using data; background data can start a session once data roaming is on |
| Three UK | Daily roaming charge of Β£8 for customers who joined or upgraded from 18 December 2025 (Β£7 or Β£5 before) | Using your allowance in a Go Roam destination |
| O2 UK | O2 Travel Bolt On Β£7 a day in selected destinations; standard rates otherwise | Pay Monthly use outside the Europe Zone |
| Vodafone UK | USA and Turkey are in the Global Roam zone, included only on Xtra Global Roam plans; charges apply otherwise | Use outside your plan's zones |
A two-week trip with Data Roaming left on can therefore cost AT&T or Verizon customers up to $120 to $168 on a single line, for data you were already paying a travel eSIM to provide. Our article on roaming charges to check before travelling goes through the fine print.
EU SIM in the EU: you may not need any of this
If your SIM comes from an EU country and you travel within the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, the EU's roam-like-at-home rules apply: calls, texts and data cost the same as at home, within your operator's fair-use limits, and you are not charged extra to receive calls or texts. A travel eSIM only makes sense there if your home allowance is small.
The rules do not cover the UK or Switzerland, and they don't cover satellite networks on ships and planes: the EU advises deactivating roaming or using flight mode there. Outside Europe, in Turkey, Morocco or Mexico for example, EU carriers charge their own rates, and the dual-line setup above is what saves you money. British and American visitors to Spain get no EU protection either.
Phones that run only one eSIM at a time
Keeping your number on while a travel eSIM runs needs two active lines. Not every eSIM phone can do that with two eSIMs:
| Phone | Two lines at once | Two active eSIMs |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 12, SE (2nd and 3rd gen) | Yes: nano-SIM + eSIM | No (Apple: two eSIMs on iPhone 13 and later) |
| iPhone 13 and later | Yes | Yes |
| Pixel 3a to Pixel 6a | Yes: SIM card + eSIM (not Pixel 3a bought in Japan) | No (Google: Pixel 7 and later) |
| Pixel 7 and later | Yes | Yes, if the carrier allows it; US Pixel 10 and later (except 10 Pro Fold) are eSIM-only |
| Samsung Galaxy | Physical SIM + eSIM on supported models | Not stated on Samsung's support page: check SIM manager |

If your home number is on a physical SIM, these phones are fine: SIM for the number, eSIM for travel data. If your home number is already an eSIM on a one-eSIM phone, you have three options:
- Ask your carrier for a physical SIM for the trip, well before you leave.
- Keep the home eSIM off while you use the travel eSIM, and turn it back on when you need an SMS code. Turning a line off is not deleting it (Apple's travel page tells you to use Turn On this Line to bring it back), but check you can still see both under Settings > Cellular or SIM manager before you rely on it.
- Use your home line with a roaming pass for the trip instead of a travel eSIM.
Locked phones are a separate problem: see do you need an unlocked phone for a travel eSIM.
Checklist before you fly
- Check your phone supports eSIM and two lines on our compatible devices list, and that it is unlocked.
- Add an email address to your WhatsApp account; don't plan to reinstall WhatsApp abroad.
- Install the travel eSIM on Wi-Fi a day or two before departure, without starting its validity if the provider allows it (when to install).
- Turn on Wi-Fi Calling for your home line while you are still at home.
- On arrival: travel eSIM for Cellular/Mobile data, home line for calls and texts, Data Roaming off on the home line, automatic data switching off.
- Read your carrier's rates for receiving calls and SMS in your destination, and move bank 2FA to an app if you can.
Next step: pick a plan for your destination, for example Turkey, Morocco, Mexico or Spain.
How we checked
On 27 October 2026 we read Apple Support (Using Dual SIM with an eSIM, Use eSIM while traveling internationally, data roaming options, Wi-Fi Calling), Google Pixel Help (Use dual SIMs), Samsung's US and UK support pages, the WhatsApp Help Center, the EU's Your Europe roaming page, and the roaming pages of AT&T, Verizon, Three, O2 and Vodafone UK. Menu labels are those of iOS 26 and of Google's and Samsung's current English pages; Samsung does not name a One UI version.
What we could not verify: T-Mobile and EE pages could not be read on that date, and no UK carrier page we reached stated its Wi-Fi Calling rules abroad, so we don't quote them. WhatsApp's help pages state how verification works abroad, not a blanket promise that you will never be asked for a code. Carrier prices change: check your own plan before you travel.
