Part of our Mauritius eSIM guide: all articles and key facts →
Mauritius and Réunion are neighbours in the Indian Ocean. For an eSIM, Mauritius and Réunion are two very different cases: Réunion is part of the European Union, Mauritius is not. This guide explains what that changes, which eSIM plans really cover both islands on 16 October 2026, and when two separate plans cost less than one.
Key takeaways
- Réunion is one of the EU's outermost regions, so a mobile plan from an EU country roams there at home prices under the EU's roam-like-at-home rules; Mauritius is outside the EU, and those rules do not apply there.
- On 16 October 2026, Airalo had no single plan for both islands: its Africa plan covered Mauritius but not Réunion, and its global Discover plan covered Réunion but not Mauritius.
- eSIMDB listed 2,470 plans on both its Mauritius and Réunion pages, such as Ubigi's BEST AFRICA at €15 for 3 GB over 30 days and Yesim's Global Plus at €24 for 5 GB over 30 days; with the brands in this guide, two local plans cost about the same for light and medium use.
One eSIM or two for Mauritius and Réunion?
If your mobile plan comes from an EU country, you need only one extra plan: use your home plan in Réunion at home prices, and buy an eSIM or a tourist pack for Mauritius. If your plan comes from outside the EU, for example from the UK or the US, compare one regional eSIM against two local ones; with the brands in this guide, two local plans cost about the same for light and medium use, and an unlimited regional plan is the alternative for heavy use.
Among those brands, single plans for both islands started with Ubigi's BEST AFRICA, listed on eSIMDB at €7 for 1 GB and €15 for 3 GB over 30 days, and Yesim's Global Plus at €24 for 5 GB. Airalo sold no single plan for both islands.
The details depend on how much data you use and how long you stay on each island. The sections below give the rules, the plans and worked examples.
Why does a European plan work in Réunion at home prices?
Réunion is a French overseas department and one of the EU's outermost regions, so it is EU territory and the roam-like-at-home rules apply there. The European Commission's page on the outermost regions describes them as "the most remote territories of the Union" and lists Réunion among them, alongside Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, French Guiana, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands.
The EU's Your Europe page on roaming explains the rule: calls, texts and data used while travelling in the EU are charged at your domestic price, as long as you spend more time, or use your phone more, at home than abroad. The Commission's roaming policy page adds that the regime covers the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova.
French operators say the same in their own terms. Free's price brochure of 21 July 2026 defines its "DOM" zone as Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Mayotte and La Réunion, and its Free 5G+ plan includes 35 GB a month of data in Europe and these overseas departments. Other EU operators set their own zone lists, so check that Réunion appears in your operator's EU zone.
Is there a data limit in Réunion with an EU plan?
There can be: an operator may apply a fair use limit on data when your plan is unlimited or very cheap per gigabyte, and must tell you in advance. Your Europe says that above that limit the surcharge cannot be higher than the EU wholesale data cap, set at €1.30 per GB plus VAT in 2025 and falling over time. The Commission's page says the cap was €2 per GB in 2022 and falls to €1 in 2027.
In practice, check the "Europe" or "EU" allowance written in your contract. Free's 5G+ plan, for instance, gives 35 GB a month in Europe and the overseas departments, while its plan in mainland France includes 350 GB. Your operator must warn you when you reach 80% of the limit.
Roam-like-at-home is meant for periodic travel, not for living abroad. A holiday in Réunion is the normal case; Your Europe warns that using your phone abroad permanently may lead your operator to charge extra.
Why is Mauritius different?
Mauritius is an independent country outside the EU, so roaming there is not regulated by EU law and costs whatever your operator charges. Your Europe says plainly that countries outside the EU and the EEA, apart from Ukraine and Moldova, "are not covered by this regime, but many operators choose to extend these offers to such countries as well".
Some do. Free's Free Max plan, at €29.99 a month, includes unlimited data in more than 140 destinations, and its list names both "Maurice (Ile)" and "Réunion (Ile de La)". Its Free 5G+ plan includes Réunion in its 35 GB but not Mauritius. Unless your plan names Mauritius, assume roaming there is expensive and buy a local option.
For Mauritius, the choice is between a travel eSIM and the operators' tourist packs. On 16 October 2026, my.t and Emtel each sold 30 days of unlimited 5G data for €30. Emtel adds that the benefits "cannot be used during International Roaming", so the Mauritian pack will not cover your days in Réunion. Our comparison of the best eSIMs for Mauritius sets out all the options.
What about UK and US travellers?
UK and US mobile plans are not covered by the EU rules, so Réunion counts as a foreign destination priced by your own operator. The Commission's roaming page notes that since the United Kingdom left the EU, the roam-like-at-home regime no longer applies to it, although some operators have chosen to keep similar benefits.
Whether a UK or US plan treats Réunion as part of a Europe zone is decided by each operator; the only reliable answer is the destination list on your operator's roaming page. If Réunion and Mauritius are both outside your plan, the comparison of regional and local eSIMs below is the one that matters.
Our guide to roaming charges to check before travelling lists what to look for on an operator's page, and our article on eSIMs for travel in Europe covers the EU rules in more depth.
Which eSIM plans cover both Mauritius and Réunion?
On 16 October 2026, eSIMDB listed 2,470 regional and global plans on both its Mauritius and its Réunion pages, including plans from Ubigi, Yesim, Saily, aloSIM, Nomad and Maya Mobile; Airalo and Holafly had none. We compared the plans that appear on eSIMDB's Mauritius page and its Réunion page at the same time, and kept the list prices.
| Plan covering both islands | Examples (checked on 16 October 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ubigi BEST AFRICA | 1 GB / 30 days €7; 3 GB / 30 days €15; 10 GB / 30 days €30 | eSIMDB |
| Yesim Global Plus | 5 GB / 30 days €24; 10 GB / 90 days €39 | eSIMDB |
| Saily Global | 1 GB / 7 days $8.99; 5 GB / 30 days $29.99; 10 GB / 30 days $44.99 | eSIMDB |
| aloSIM Global | 1 GB / 7 days $10; 5 GB / 30 days $35; 10 GB / 30 days $50 | eSIMDB |
| Nomad Regional Global | 1 GB / 7 days €10.71; 5 GB / 30 days €35.69; 10 GB / 30 days €55.32 | eSIMDB |
| Maya Mobile Unlimited Global Data | 7 days $19.99; 14 days $27.99; 30 days $49.99 (5 GB a day at full speed) | eSIMDB |
These are multi-country plans: their country lists are long and change, and we could not read Ubigi's or Yesim's full list on the providers' own sites. Check that both Mauritius and Réunion appear in the provider's app before you pay. eSIMDB lists Ubigi on the my.t and Emtel networks in Mauritius, and Yesim's Global Plus on my.t and CHiLi.
Yesim's own global package page describes the Global Plus package as covering 145 countries. Maya Mobile's site refused our reader, so its prices come from eSIMDB only. The table is not the whole market: more than 100 smaller sellers had plans on both eSIMDB pages, some cheaper than these, for example Tripuck's Global 3 GB for 30 days at €6.98, which we did not check on the seller's site.
Why Airalo has no plan for both islands
Airalo's regional plans split the two islands: Mauritius is in its Africa plan, Réunion is in its global plan, and no Airalo plan we found includes both. We read the country lists in Airalo's own data on 16 October 2026.
- Hello Africa covers 36 countries, including Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles, but not Réunion. It cost €10.50 for 1 GB over 7 days and €23.50 for 3 GB over 30 days.
- Discover, Airalo's global plan, and Discover+, its version with calls and texts, cover Réunion and Seychelles but not Mauritius; Discover starts at €8.00 for 1 GB over 7 days.
- Eurolink, its Europe plan, covers neither island.
Airalo does sell a local plan for each island, which makes it a candidate for the "two plans" approach below. Its Réunion eSIM runs on the Orange network.
How much do two local plans cost?
For Réunion alone, Airalo's local plans started at €4.00 for 1 GB over 7 days; combined with a Mauritius plan, two local eSIMs cost about as much as one regional plan from the same brands. Here are the main local prices on 16 October 2026.
| Island | Local plans (checked on 16 October 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Réunion | Airalo: 1 GB / 7 days €4.00; 3 GB / 30 days €8.50; 5 GB / 30 days €12.50; 10 GB / 30 days €21.00; unlimited 10 days €32.50 | Airalo data |
| Mauritius | Ubigi 1 GB / 7 days €5; Yesim 3 GB / 7 days €11.00; Airalo 5 GB / 7 days €17.00; Yesim 10 GB / 30 days €24.00; my.t or Emtel tourist pack, unlimited 30 days, €30 | Provider pages, eSIMDB, operators |
eSIMDB lists four networks in Réunion: Orange, SFR Réunion, Free and Only. Airalo's Réunion plans are data only and its unlimited plan slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day, as its Mauritius plans do.
Which networks will you use on each island?
In Réunion, Airalo's local eSIM uses Orange; in Mauritius, the plans we compared use my.t, Emtel or CHiLi, depending on the provider. eSIMDB lists four networks in Réunion (Orange, SFR Réunion, Free and Only) and three in Mauritius (my.t, Emtel and CHiLi). A regional plan usually picks its partner networks itself, and a provider can change them without notice, so the network named today is not a promise for your trip dates.
On the Mauritian side, Airalo and Nomad name Emtel on their pages and Holafly names my.t. For regional plans, we only have eSIMDB's data: my.t and Emtel for Ubigi's BEST AFRICA, my.t and CHiLi for Yesim's Global Plus. If one network matters to you, for example because you are staying in a remote part of the island, a local plan that names it is the safer choice. Our guide to the my.t, Emtel and CHiLi tourist packs explains what is known about coverage, including on Rodrigues.
Which is cheaper: three worked examples
With the brands in this guide, two local plans matched one regional plan for light and medium use; for heavy use, Ubigi's 25 GB regional plan cost €3 less than our two-plan example, with a data cap. We used list prices in euros where the seller sells in euros, so no conversion was needed.
Light use: one week in Mauritius, a few days in Réunion
Ubigi's 1 GB for 7 days in Mauritius at €5 plus Airalo's 1 GB for 7 days in Réunion at €4.00 cost €9 for 2 GB in total. Ubigi's BEST AFRICA 1 GB for 30 days at €7 costs less, but gives only 1 GB for both islands. For about 3 GB across both islands, BEST AFRICA at €15 costs the same as Yesim's 3 GB for 7 days in Mauritius (€11.00) plus Airalo's 1 GB in Réunion (€4.00), which together give 4 GB: the regional plan only saves one installation.
Medium use: ten days in total, about 5 GB on each island
Airalo's 5 GB for 7 days in Mauritius at €17.00 plus its 5 GB for 30 days in Réunion at €12.50 total €29.50 for 10 GB. Ubigi's BEST AFRICA 10 GB for 30 days costs €30 on its own. The two are almost equal; the regional plan saves an installation, the local plans give you each island's allowance separately.
Heavy use: two weeks in Mauritius, one in Réunion
my.t's or Emtel's €30 tourist pack covers Mauritius with unlimited data for 30 days. Adding Airalo's 10 GB for 30 days in Réunion at €21.00 brings the total to €51 with no data counting in Mauritius. Ubigi's BEST AFRICA sells 25 GB for 30 days at €48 for both islands together. Maya Mobile's 30-day Unlimited Global Data plan, listed on eSIMDB at $49.99 with 5 GB a day at full speed, is the regional option with no data counting on either island; we could not check it on Maya's own site, so read its terms before you buy.
With an EU plan, all three examples get cheaper: the Réunion part costs nothing beyond your usual monthly bill, within your operator's Europe allowance.
Practical tips for a two-island trip
Install every eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, and switch lines on arrival rather than buying on landing. A modern phone can hold several eSIMs and use one at a time for data, as our guide to running two travel eSIMs at the same time explains.
- Check when each plan's clock starts. Yesim's validity begins when the eSIM connects to a network, and Airalo's Mauritius plans start on first use; a 7-day plan bought for the second island will not expire during the first.
- With an EU plan, keep data roaming on for Réunion and switch it off before you land in Mauritius, unless your plan includes Mauritius.
- If you buy a Mauritian tourist pack, keep your passport handy: the operators ask for passport details and your address of stay. Our guide to Mauritius local SIMs from my.t, Emtel and CHiLi lists the documents.
- Find your EID in advance with our guide to the EID number on Android, Samsung and iPhone, and keep our fixes for an eSIM stuck on activating to hand.
Does your phone take two eSIMs?
Every option in this guide needs a phone that supports eSIM and is not locked to your home operator. Check your model in our list of eSIM-compatible phones or on our pages for the iPhone, the Galaxy S25 series and Google Pixel. If you are not sure about the lock, read whether you need an unlocked phone for a travel eSIM.
The number of eSIMs a phone can store varies by model, but switching the data line between two installed eSIMs is done in the settings in a few seconds, with no new QR code. If your phone takes only one extra eSIM, the regional plan becomes the simpler choice.
