What this means in practice

A cellular Apple Watch is eSIM-only by construction: there is no room for a SIM tray. Setup happens in the Watch app on the paired iPhone, and the watch's plan must come from the same carrier as that iPhone — so a travel eSIM bought for the phone cannot be installed on the watch. GPS-only versions have no modem and cannot take an eSIM.
