To install an Egypt eSIM, you scan a QR code on Wi-Fi before you travel, then switch the line on and allow data roaming when you land. The job takes a few minutes. This guide gives the exact iPhone, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy menus, the settings that decide whether the eSIM connects in Egypt, the network codes to look for, and what to do when it does not work.
Key takeaways
- Install the Egypt eSIM at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly: the Egypt plans we checked start counting at the first connection in Egypt, not at installation.
- On landing, the eSIM line needs data roaming switched on and must be chosen for mobile data; your home line keeps data roaming off.
- Egypt's networks carry the codes 602 01 (Orange), 602 02 (Vodafone), 602 03 (e&) and 602 04 (WE); most travel eSIMs use one or more of the first three.
What do you need before you install an Egypt eSIM?
Three things: a phone with eSIM hardware, a phone that is not locked to your operator, and a stable internet connection.
- eSIM hardware. On iPhone, that means an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or any later model, according to Apple. On Android, it depends on the model and sometimes on the country where the phone was sold. Our list of eSIM-compatible phones covers the brands, and the check without an app gives a definite answer.
- An unlocked phone. On iPhone, open Settings › General › About and look for "No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock. A locked phone refuses a foreign profile with the message "Cellular Plans From This Carrier Cannot be Added". Our guide to unlocked phones and travel eSIMs explains how to get a lock removed.
- Wi-Fi or a hotspot while you install. Apple states that the iPhone must be connected to download the profile. Cairo airport's free network sends its sign-in code by SMS, so installing at home is simpler than installing in the arrivals hall.
Storage is rarely a problem. Apple says an iPhone can manage up to eight or more eSIMs, and Airalo's help pages give 5 to 10 depending on storage. Delete old, expired travel eSIMs at home if you need space, never the day you fly.
When should you install it?
One or two days before departure. Every Egypt plan we checked starts counting its days when it first connects to a network, not when you install it:
| Provider (Egypt plan) | When the validity starts | Networks named for Egypt |
|---|---|---|
| eSIM Égypte | First connection to an Egyptian network, airport transit included | Vodafone, Orange, e& |
| Airalo | First use; to be activated within 365 days | Vodafone (4G) |
| Holafly | As soon as it connects to a supported network | Orange |
| Nomad | Connection to the destination network; to be activated within 60 days | Orange, Vodafone |
| Yesim | Connection to a network; to be activated within 180 days | e& (Etisalat), Orange |
| Ubigi | On arrival ("Smartstart") | Orange, e& |
| Jetpac | On arrival | Not named on its page |
These details come from the providers' pages or plan data, checked on 25 September 2026. The activation windows matter if you buy early: an Airalo plan can wait a year, a Nomad plan only 60 days. Airalo's general help adds that, in rare cases, validity may begin at installation, so read the package details before you scan.
eSIM Égypte counts its days as consecutive calendar days from that first connection, according to its terms. A 7-day plan therefore covers seven dates, whatever time you land.
What if you change planes in Cairo?
Keep the Egypt eSIM line switched off until your stay starts. Cairo International Airport is a major transit hub, with 31,137,557 passengers in 2025. eSIM Égypte states that an airport transit counts as a first connection, so a connection in Cairo on the way to somewhere else would use a day of the plan.
The same applies if you land in Cairo and fly on to Luxor, Aswan or the Red Sea the next morning: the plan has started, which is fine, because you are in Egypt. The risk only concerns a stop in Cairo when your stay is elsewhere, or later.
On iPhone, go to Settings › Cellular, tap the Egypt line and switch off "Turn On This Line". On a Pixel, open Settings › Network & internet › Mobile network, choose the eSIM and switch off "Use this SIM". Switch it back on when your stay begins.
How to install an Egypt eSIM on iPhone
Apple calls the menu Cellular in the United States and Mobile Service in the United Kingdom. The steps are the same; only the labels change. Here is the translation, from Apple's US page and its UK version:
| US iPhone label | UK iPhone label |
|---|---|
| Cellular | Mobile Service |
| Set Up Cellular | Set Up Mobile |
| Add Cellular Plan | Add Mobile Plan |
| Cellular Data Options | Mobile Data Options |
| Allow Cellular Data Switching | Allow Mobile Data Switching |
| Cellular Plan Label | Mobile Plan Label |
With the QR code
- Open the Camera app and point it at the QR code sent by the provider.
- Tap the "Cellular Plan Detected" notification. On iOS 17.4 or later, you can instead touch and hold a QR code received in Mail and choose "Add eSIM".
- Tap Continue at the bottom of the screen, then "Add Cellular Plan".
- When iOS asks, label the new line "Egypt". It makes the next settings easier to read.
If the code reaches you on the iPhone itself, the touch-and-hold method in Mail avoids needing a second screen. Apple's iPhone guide also describes the path Settings › Cellular › Add eSIM › Use QR Code, where you may need to tap Other Options first.
Without the QR code
Go to Settings › Cellular › Add eSIM (tap Other Options if needed) and choose "Enter Details Manually". Type the SM-DP+ address and the activation code from the provider's email. Our manual activation guide shows where to find both.
Some providers send a link instead. On iOS 17.4 or later, tapping it shows an "Activate New eSIM" notification: tap Allow, then Continue.
The iOS 26 travel prompt
On iOS 26 and later, a "Turn On Travel eSIM" notification appears when you arrive, with the choice "Travel eSIM Only" or "Travel eSIM and Current eSIM". If you keep both, the travel eSIM carries the data. Apple's travel page warns that you might still incur roaming fees from your home line, so the settings below still matter.
iOS 26 may also ask, when you install an eSIM bought before departure, whether it is for home or for travel, and after the arrival prompt it offers Low Data Mode or "Not Now". On your return it can switch the travel eSIM off and your home line back on, depending on the country.
How to install an Egypt eSIM on Android
Google Pixel
Open Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Add SIM › Set up an eSIM, then scan the QR code, as described in Google's Pixel help. On a new Pixel, the same step appears during setup as Download SIM › Set up. Some steps require Android 11 or later.
Every Pixel from the Pixel 4 onwards supports eSIM; on the Pixel 3a and 3, it depends on the country and carrier of purchase, and the Pixel 2 supports eSIM only with Google Fi. From the Pixel 7, two eSIMs can be active at once if the operator allows it. US Pixel 10 models are eSIM-only, and our Pixel 10 page lists the models.
Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings › Connections › SIM manager › Add eSIM › Scan QR code. To type the details instead, choose "Enter activation code" on the same screen. Samsung says to restart the phone after adding the eSIM so that the profile applies. The Galaxy S25 and Galaxy A pages list which Samsung models take one.
In the same SIM manager, the Primary SIM settings decide which line handles calls, messages and mobile data. That is where you point mobile data at the Egypt eSIM on arrival.
Other brands use similar menus; our step-by-step Android activation guide covers the variants.
Which settings make it connect when you land in Egypt?
Three settings: the eSIM line switched on, data roaming on for that line, and that line chosen for mobile data. A travel eSIM is a foreign line roaming on an Egyptian network, which is why roaming must be allowed. Airalo's Egypt plan lists data roaming as a requirement, and Airalo's troubleshooting page notes that some eSIMs require data roaming to be switched on.
| Setting | Egypt eSIM line | Home line |
|---|---|---|
| Line switched on | On | On, for calls and bank SMS |
| Data roaming | On | Off |
| Mobile data line | Selected | Not selected |
- iPhone: Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data › choose the Egypt line. Then Settings › Cellular › tap the Egypt line › Cellular Data Options › Data Roaming on. Do the opposite on the home line, and leave "Allow Cellular Data Switching" off so the phone does not fall back on your home line abroad, as Airalo advises.
- Pixel: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs, choose the Egypt eSIM for Mobile data, then switch Roaming on in that SIM's settings. Each SIM has its own tab at the top of the screen.
- Samsung: in Settings › Connections › SIM manager, set the Egypt eSIM as the primary SIM for mobile data, then switch on Settings › Connections › Mobile Networks › Data Roaming.
If Data Roaming is greyed out on a Samsung, Samsung's roaming help page says to switch on mobile data first, under Settings › Connections › Data usage › Mobile data. On Pixel 8a and later, an "Automatic data switching" option exists too; leaving it off keeps the home line from carrying data abroad.
Switching on data roaming for the eSIM does not in itself bring a bill from your home operator: Nomad's help states that enabling it "does not result in standard roaming charges from your home carrier". The bill comes from the home line if its roaming stays on. Egypt is outside the EU roaming zone, and our guide to every way to get internet in Egypt gives the roaming offers of several European operators.
Can you keep your own number working at the same time?
Yes, as long as your home line stays on with data roaming off. Calls and SMS keep reaching your usual number, which matters in Egypt for two reasons: bank codes, and the SMS code that Cairo airport's free Wi-Fi sends when you register. A travel eSIM for Egypt is data-only, with no Egyptian number.
Apple's dual SIM page documents two side effects. If data roaming is on for the line that carries data, the voice-only line loses Visual Voicemail and MMS. And "Allow Cellular Data Switching" does not work while you are using data roaming.
Calls received on your home number may still be billed as roaming by your operator, so check its price list. Our guide to running two eSIMs at the same time covers the combinations.
Which Egyptian network will your phone show?
One of four, identified by the country code 602 and a network code. The codes are the reliable way to recognise a network, because the name shown on screen can vary. The list of mobile network codes on Wikipedia gives:
| Code | Brand | Operator | Technologies listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 602 01 | Orange | Orange Egypt | 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G |
| 602 02 | Vodafone | Vodafone Egypt | 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G |
| 602 03 | e& | e& Egypt | 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G |
| 602 04 | WE | Telecom Egypt | 4G and 5G only |
The same list gives the frequency bands: GSM 900/1800, UMTS 2100, LTE 1800 and 5G 2500 for the first three, and only LTE 1800 and 5G 2500 for WE. Because WE has no 2G or 3G layer, a phone must work on 4G to use it at all.
Orange Egypt's own "Travel to Egypt" page says its network appears as "EGY - Orange", "ECMS Orange" or "602 01". We found no official display name for the other three networks, so rely on the code if the name looks unfamiliar.
Your plan decides which network you can join. Airalo's Egypt plan uses Vodafone only, Holafly and aloSIM use Orange, Nomad uses Orange and Vodafone, and Yesim and Ubigi use Orange and e&. eSIM Égypte names Vodafone, Orange and e&. None of the well-known providers lists WE.
If your eSIM sits on "No Service" in an area where its network should work, select the network by hand: switch off automatic network selection on the eSIM line and pick one your plan names. eSIM Égypte suggests exactly that in its troubleshooting pages. On iPhone, Airalo places this under the line's Network Selection menu; on a Pixel, it is the SIM's Network setting.
Do you need to enter an APN?
Usually not, and no Egypt-specific APN is published by the providers we checked. The APN is the setting that tells the phone how to reach the data network. Airalo's help notes that some eSIMs require a specific APN, which you then copy from the plan details; Holafly's general setup guide gives "Global".
You only need it when the line shows signal bars but no internet. The provider's installation email or app is the reference, because the value differs from one provider to another.
Where to type it: on iPhone, Settings › Cellular › the eSIM line › Cellular Data Network, according to Airalo and Holafly; fill in the APN and leave the other fields empty. On a Pixel, the SIM's settings have an "Access point names" entry, according to Google's network settings page. On a Samsung, Holafly gives Settings › Connections › Mobile networks › Access Point Names.
Will Egypt's phone customs rules affect your phone?
Not for a normal holiday: tourists remain exempt for 90 days. The NTRA, Egypt's telecom regulator, ended the customs exemption for phones carried by passengers at 12:00 on 21 January 2026. Its notice states that the exemption continues for Egyptians living abroad and for tourists for a period of 90 days.
The same notice says taxes can be paid through the "Telephony" app, banks and e-wallets, that registering phones at customs offices has been abolished, and that the hotline is 15380. Egyptian Streets reported that phones using foreign SIM cards with active roaming plans are exempt from the fees.
Two points remain open. The NTRA notice we read does not mention roaming or travel eSIMs, so no official text says how a travel eSIM is treated. And no source we found explains what happens to a tourist's phone after 90 days. Some eSIM sellers claim that a travel eSIM avoids phone registration; we found no official confirmation, so do not rely on it for a long stay.
What to do if the Egypt eSIM does not connect
Work down this table in order. Each line is a symptom documented by Apple, Google, Samsung or the eSIM providers.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "No Service" or "SOS" only | Data roaming off on the eSIM, or wrong date and time | Data roaming on for the eSIM line; date and time set automatically; Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off |
| Signal bars but no internet | The eSIM is not the mobile data line, or an APN is needed | Choose the eSIM for mobile data; enter the APN from the provider's email if it gives one |
| Connected to the wrong network | Automatic selection picked a network your plan does not use | Select a network your plan names by hand, using the 602 codes above |
| "PDP authentication failure" (Android) | Wrong APN, or a plan used up or expired | Check the APN and the remaining data, then reset the mobile network settings |
| "Cellular Plans From This Carrier Cannot be Added" | Phone locked to your home operator | Ask your operator to unlock it; no setting bypasses the lock |
| "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change" | QR code already used, too many stored eSIMs, or a weak connection | Check whether the eSIM is already listed; install on a stronger Wi-Fi |
| "Unable to Activate eSIM" | Sometimes installed anyway; or no internet, old iOS, a VPN or a management profile | Look for the line in Settings › Cellular; restart; update iOS; switch off the VPN |
On a Pixel, the reset is under System › Reset options › Reset Mobile Network Settings. On iPhone, Apple also suggests updating the carrier settings under General › About, and on iOS 18 and later its Apple Support app can run diagnostics.
Two rules save most trips. First, do not delete the eSIM to start again. Apple writes: "Don't erase an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless directed to by your carrier", and Airalo notes that most eSIMs can only be installed once. eSIM Égypte's QR code, for instance, can be scanned once and cannot be moved to another phone. Our recovery guide covers the case where it is already too late.
Second, if nothing works, write to the provider's support with the error message and the phone's EID, found under General › About on iPhone. The list of ten fixes for a travel eSIM abroad covers rarer cases.
Which Egypt eSIM is easiest to install?
They all install the same way, with a QR code and the same phone menus. The differences lie in the networks, the daily allowance, the price and the support you can reach. Top-ups differ too: Airalo, Yesim, aloSIM and Nomad's fixed-data plans let you add data to the same eSIM (we did not find Ubigi's top-up rule for Egypt), while eSIM Égypte asks you to buy and install a new eSIM to extend a stay.
eSIM Égypte names three Egyptian networks, Vodafone, Orange and e&, and picks the best one automatically, which gives the phone a fallback if one network is weak. Hotspot sharing is allowed on every plan, validity starts at the first connection in Egypt, and support answers by email seven days a week, in English and French. Payment works by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
On 25 September 2026 it cost €6.50 for 1 day, €18 for 3 days, €33 for 7 days and €46 for 15 days, cheaper than Holafly at every length, and it sells a 1-day plan, which Airalo, Nomad, aloSIM and Ubigi do not. Its limits: about 1 GB a day at full speed, then 512 kbps, the smallest allowance among the named brands that publish one, and prices above the market median, for example €33 for 7 days against a median of €24.77 (esimdb, 1 October 2026, Egypt-only plans with at least 1 GB a day at full speed).
Our comparison of the best Egypt eSIMs sets out who wins at each trip length, and the Cairo guide explains which networks measure fastest.
