Part of our Egypt eSIM guide: all articles and key facts →

An eSIM for Sharm el-Sheikh is the simplest way to be online when you walk out of SSH airport, because the only Wi-Fi report we found for the terminal suggests a foreign number may not get the access code. Sharm is also the base for day trips to Ras Mohammed, Dahab and Mount Sinai, where hotel Wi-Fi no longer helps. This guide sets out what is known about the networks, the airport and the plans.

Key takeaways

  • Sharm el-Sheikh airport handled 9,046,690 passengers in 2025, up 32.3%, but the only Wi-Fi report we found dates from January 2024 and says a foreign number may not receive the access code, so install a travel eSIM before you fly.
  • No independent speed test covers Sharm el-Sheikh or the Sinai: the published figures are national, and the coverage lists for Sharm, Dahab and Mount Sinai come from the companies themselves.
  • On 1 October 2026, among the six providers we read, a week of unlimited travel eSIM data for Egypt cost from €23.69 to €33.90, and Ubigi sold 8 days for €27; eSIM Égypte (€33) is above the market median but is the only one of the six that names Vodafone, Orange and e& together.

Why plan your mobile data before Sharm el-Sheikh?

Because Sharm is a fast-growing destination, and the only report we found on its airport Wi-Fi is not reassuring. Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport handled 9,046,690 passengers in 2025, up 32.3% on 2024, the strongest growth among Egypt's large airports on the list compiled by Wikipedia. It is Egypt's third-busiest airport, after Cairo and Hurghada, with one large terminal for most international flights and a second mainly for domestic ones.

The town sits at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in the South Sinai Governorate, of which it is the administrative centre. According to Wikipedia, that governorate also includes Dahab, Nuweiba, Saint Catherine and Mount Sinai, and Sharm itself had about 77,000 inhabitants in 2017. Naama Bay is its main tourist hub, with cafés, restaurants, hotels and bazaars.

Visitors on an all-inclusive week may stay on hotel Wi-Fi most of the time. The moments that need mobile data are the transfer from the airport, a taxi into Naama Bay, an excursion pick-up, and any day trip into the Sinai.

How fast is mobile internet in Sharm el-Sheikh?

We found no independent figure for Sharm el-Sheikh, only national results for Egypt. Opensignal, Ookla and nPerf all report the country as a whole. Their figures give an order of magnitude, not a local promise:

Source and periodWhat it measuresResult for Egypt
Opensignal, 1 Nov 2025 – 29 Jan 2026Everyday use, measured in the background13.8 to 25.5 Mbps average download, by operator
Ookla Speedtest, August 2026 indexTests launched by users52.32 Mbps median download, 27 ms latency
nPerf, 1 Apr 2025 – 31 Mar 2026Tests launched by users12.53 to 24.58 Mbps average download, by operator

Ookla's Speedtest Global Index ranked Egypt 78th in the world for median mobile download in August 2026. The two sources use different methods: Opensignal measures in the background during everyday use, while Speedtest results come from tests that users launch themselves, so their figures are not comparable.

The regulator, the NTRA, runs monthly field tests in several regions, but the list on its quality-of-service page does not name the Sinai separately. Its latest quarterly report online, for the first quarter of 2024, grades Red Sea areas such as Hurghada pass or fail, but no area in South Sinai, and it gives no speeds. Any "Mbps in Sharm" figure you read on a seller's website therefore comes without a published method.

Which Egyptian network covers Sharm el-Sheikh best?

No source compares the networks in Sharm itself; nationally, WE is fastest and Vodafone is fastest of the three networks travel eSIMs use. Egypt has four operators: Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt (formerly Etisalat Misr) and WE, from Telecom Egypt.

Opensignal's February 2026 report measured average downloads of 25.5 Mbps on WE, 17.3 Mbps on Vodafone, 16.4 Mbps on e& and 13.8 Mbps on Orange. In nPerf's yearly barometer, Vodafone had the lowest latency of the four, at 130.6 ms, which helps video calls feel responsive.

Vodafone is the only operator we found that publishes a 5G list naming South Sinai. Its 5G network locations page includes Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab among more than 100 areas. We found no equivalent list from Orange, e& or WE, and travel eSIMs do not all open 5G: Airalo lists its Vodafone access as 4G, and eSIM Égypte calls 5G "not guaranteed".

The useful conclusion for a visitor is about fallback rather than speed. A plan that can join several networks lets the phone switch operator if one is weak at your hotel or on an excursion route.

Can you get online at Sharm el-Sheikh airport?

Possibly for a few minutes, but the only report we found is old and suggests a foreign number may not work. The Sleeping in Airports guide, last updated on 31 January 2024, says free Wi-Fi is available for 15 minutes. It quotes a reader who reports needing an Egyptian mobile number to receive the access code, because the code was not sent to a foreign phone.

That report is a traveller's testimony and is more than two years old, so it may have changed. Still, it points to the safest plan: arrive with mobile data already working. A travel eSIM installed at home connects when you switch it on after landing, without Wi-Fi and without a counter.

We found no reliable source on SIM counters in the SSH arrivals hall; the descriptions we found came from tour sellers and forums. Vodafone's own Tourist Line page says its tourist SIM is sold at the "Vodafone airport store" and in its retail stores, without saying which airports. Whatever the counter, Egypt's SIM sales rules require a foreigner to show an original passport and a residency document in person.

Which travel eSIMs work in Sharm el-Sheikh, and on which network?

All Egypt plans cover Sharm el-Sheikh; they differ in the networks they may join and the full-speed data they give. We read six providers' Egypt pages on 1 October 2026; prices are in the currency each one sells in.

ProviderNetworks named7 days15 days
NomadOrange, Vodafone€23.69No plan (10 days €30.71)
Yesime&, Orange€24.50€39 (promotional)
AiraloVodafone€29€44.50
eSIM ÉgypteVodafone, Orange, e&€33€46
HolaflyOrange€33.90€46.90
UbigiOrange, e&No plan (8 days €27)€44

The full-speed allowances differ as much as the prices. Ubigi gives 5 GB a day, then 2 Mbps; Airalo 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps; Nomad 2 GB a day, then 1 Mbps; eSIM Égypte about 1 GB a day, then 512 kbps. Holafly and Yesim publish no daily figure. Our guide to unlimited Egypt eSIMs and their real caps explains what each slow speed still allows.

For the whole market, the comparison database esimdb listed 154 Egypt-only 7-day plans with a daily full-speed allowance of at least 1 GB on 1 October 2026. Their median price was €24.77, including promotions, with dollar-only plans converted at the European Central Bank rate.

Is eSIM Égypte a good choice for Sharm el-Sheikh?

For network choice and short trips, yes; for price and heavy use, other providers do better. eSIM Égypte is an Egypt specialist and a partner of this site, so here are both sides, with the numbers.

Where it wins

  • Three networks: Vodafone, Orange and e&, chosen automatically, with manual selection possible. None of the other five providers in the table names all three.
  • Against Holafly: €33 instead of €33.90 for 7 days and €46 instead of €46.90 for 15 days.
  • Day trips: it sells a 1-day plan at €6.50 and a 3-day plan at €18, which Airalo, Nomad and Ubigi do not offer at 1 day.
  • Start on arrival: validity begins at the first connection to an Egyptian network, so you can install it at home. Hotspot is included on every plan.

Where it loses

  • Price: €33 for 7 days is above the esimdb median of €24.77, and Nomad (€23.69), Yesim (€24.50) and Airalo (€29) cost less for a week, as does Ubigi's 8-day plan (€27). At 15 days, €46 is above the median of €40.98.
  • Daily data: about 1 GB a day at full speed, the smallest allowance among providers that publish one; hotspot use comes out of the same allowance.
  • No top-up: a longer stay means buying and installing a new eSIM.

It suits a week of maps, messages, taxis and photos sent home, with a day trip or two into the Sinai where a fallback network may help. For streaming or a laptop on hotspot, Ubigi or Airalo give far more data at full speed.

Is hotel Wi-Fi in Sharm el-Sheikh fast enough?

At least one Sharm hotel measured well, but it is the only Egyptian hotel named in the only study we found. Ookla analysed 22 five-star hotels across the Middle East and North Africa, using tests from October 2023 to October 2024. The published results gave the Rixos Sharm El Sheikh a median of 93.70 Mbps, among the "good performers" between 50 and 100 Mbps.

The same study found more than 45% of the hotels below 50 Mbps. One hotel's figure says nothing about the others in Sharm, and speed in a room can differ from speed by the pool or on the beach. If you need a video call or a big upload, a mobile plan with hotspot is a sensible backup.

Will your eSIM work in Ras Mohammed, Dahab and at Mount Sinai?

The towns are listed as covered by the companies themselves; the open desert and the sea are not measured by anyone we found. The only official picture is the NTRA's roads mobile coverage map, dated October 2020: it shows coverage along the coast road from Sharm el-Sheikh to Dahab and on to Taba, and leaves large parts of the interior uncovered. It names no operator and no speed. Each popular trip from Sharm has a different profile.

Ras Mohammed

Ras Mohammed National Park lies at the southern extreme of the Sinai Peninsula, between the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba, according to Wikipedia. We found no measurement for the park, on land or on the boats that visit its reefs; the NTRA's 2020 map shades its coast as covered, but it was drawn for roads, not for boats. Treat it as a day when your phone may be offline, and save meeting points before you go.

Dahab

Dahab is about 80 km northeast of Sharm and is known as the diving capital of South Sinai. Vodafone's 5G list names Dahab. eSIM Égypte's coverage page describes Dahab as 3G to 4G; that is the seller's own description, not an independent measurement. A plan with several networks is useful here.

Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine

Saint Catherine sits at the foot of Mount Sinai at 1,586 m above sea level, and the summit rises to 2,285 m. eSIM Égypte's FAQ lists Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery as 3G with a signal that "varies by area", and the Sinai interior as weak or without signal. For a night climb to the summit, download your maps and tickets before you leave Sharm.

Opensignal adds a general warning in its reports: its availability figures measure how often people are connected where they usually go, and "won't tell you whether you are likely to get a signal" in a remote or nearly uninhabited area. That describes much of the Sinai interior.

What if your trip combines Sharm with Hurghada or Cairo?

One national plan covers all of Egypt, so you only need to size it for the total number of days. Every Egypt plan in the table works on both shores of the Red Sea and in Cairo, on the same networks. Our Hurghada eSIM guide covers the other coast, and the Cairo guide covers the capital.

The one trap is the start date. eSIM Égypte counts days from the first connection to an Egyptian network, and its FAQ says a transit at the airport counts. If you change planes in Cairo before reaching Sharm, keep the line switched off until you arrive. Other providers state similar rules: Nomad and Yesim start on connection, Ubigi on arrival.

Do WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work in Sharm el-Sheikh?

Messages work; calls may not, and we found no reliable 2026 source on their status. Freedom House, in Freedom on the Net 2025, wrote that the NTRA had announced plans to lift its ban on internet calls, but that the ban had not been lifted by May 2025 and several services remained inaccessible.

The travel eSIMs above carry data only, with no Egyptian number. Keep your home line active, with data roaming off, so bank codes and urgent calls still reach you; our guide to using two lines at once shows how.

Do Egypt's 2026 phone rules affect a Sharm holiday?

No: tourists keep a 90-day exemption. In a notice dated 20 January 2026, the NTRA ended the customs exemption for phones carried by passengers from 12:00 on 21 January 2026, but kept it for tourists for a period of 90 days.

The notice does not mention travel eSIMs or roaming. For the rules on a local line, see our guide to Vodafone, Orange, e& and WE eSIMs for tourists.

Which eSIM should you choose for Sharm el-Sheikh?

  • A week in Naama Bay, moderate use: Nomad (€23.69) or Yesim (€24.50); Ubigi (€27 for 8 days) for 5 GB a day on Orange and e&; Airalo (€29) for 3 GB a day on Vodafone.
  • Day trips to Dahab or Mount Sinai: a plan with several networks; eSIM Égypte (€33 for 7 days) names three.
  • Two weeks or heavy use: Ubigi (€44 for 15 days, 5 GB a day) or Airalo (€44.50).
  • Only an excursion day: a 1-day plan, from €3.50 at Yesim to €6.90 at Holafly.
