Agadir eSIM guide: speeds in the city, Taghazout and the Souss, and the plan to pick

Agadir averaged 161 Mbps in the regulator's May 2026 tests, but one network lagged. Speeds, 5G, the Taghazout coast, the airport and which eSIM to buy.

An eSIM for Agadir works well in the city and along the main coast road, and the regulator's 2026 tests rank Agadir among Morocco's faster cities. The catch is the network: in Agadir, one of the three operators measured clearly slower than the others. This guide gives the measured speeds for the city, Taghazout and the Souss, what they mean for your choice, and which plan fits a beach or surf trip.

Key takeaways

  • Agadir averaged 161 Mbps across the three networks in the ANRT's May 2026 tests, fourth of ten cities, and 235 Mbps for the fastest operator, but Orange Maroc was rated below the city average for download speed.
  • The 74 Mbps gap between the Agadir average and the fastest operator was the second widest of the ten cities in May 2026, after Marrakech: in Agadir, the network your eSIM connects to makes a real difference.
  • The road from Agadir to Essaouira through Taghazout averaged 67 Mbps in the ANRT's 2024 tests, but no official or independent source measures the surf spots, the Paradise Valley or the Anti-Atlas villages.

How fast is mobile internet in Agadir?

Fast: 161 Mbps on average across the three networks in May 2026, and 146 Mbps in March 2026. The ANRT, Morocco's telecom regulator, measured mobile data in the same ten cities in two campaigns in 2026, with Samsung Galaxy S23 phones in 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mode. Agadir was the only city of the Souss region in the sample:

ANRT campaignAverage download, 3 networksFastest operatorConnections that succeeded
19–21 March 2026146 Mbps190 Mbps99.48%
26–28 May 2026161 Mbps235 Mbps99.09%

In May 2026, Agadir ranked fourth of the ten cities on the average, after Rabat, Marrakech and Tanger. The average upload speed was 37 Mbps and the average latency 54 ms. A web page answered in 0.24 seconds, a full page loaded in 1.18 seconds, and a YouTube video started in 2.67 seconds on average.

One figure is weaker: 99.09% of connection attempts succeeded in Agadir in May 2026, the lowest rate of the ten cities, against 99.77% for all of them together. It still means fewer than one attempt in a hundred failed.

Both campaigns ran over three days around a public holiday, so the results may not match an ordinary week. On the day of Eid al-Adha, 27 May 2026, Agadir averaged 184 Mbps, with 266 Mbps for the fastest operator. In late 2024, on 4G only and before 5G launched, the ANRT measured 114 Mbps on average in Agadir, above the 92 Mbps average of the 71 cities tested.

Which network is best in Agadir?

Maroc Telecom and inwi: Orange Maroc was rated below the Agadir average for download speed in May 2026. The ANRT publishes the three-network average, the best operator's figure, and a symbol comparing each operator with the average. In the May 2026 report, this is how the three operators compared in Agadir:

Measure in Agadir (ANRT)Maroc TelecomOrange Marocinwi
Download, May 2026Level (=)Below average (-)Level (=)
Video start time, May 2026Level (=)Below average (-)Above average (+)
Download, Eid al-Fitr day, 20 March 2026Level (=)Below average (-)Level (=)
Video start time, March 2026Level (=)Below average (-)Well above average (++)
Latency, March 2026Below average (-)Level (=)Level (=)

For download speed, "below average" means between half and two thirds of the average. With an Agadir average of 161 Mbps, that puts Orange somewhere between about 81 and 108 Mbps in May 2026. That is still fast enough for maps, messaging and video calls, but it is the slowest of the three. On the day of Eid al-Adha alone, all three operators were rated level.

Maroc Telecom's weak point was responsiveness in March: Agadir's average latency was 71 ms over the March 2026 campaign, the highest of the ten cities, and Maroc Telecom was rated slower than average. In May, latency fell to 54 ms and all three were level.

National studies agree with the download picture. Opensignal's Morocco report for January to March 2026 measured average downloads of 27.5 Mbps on Maroc Telecom, 23.7 Mbps on Orange Maroc and 22.8 Mbps on inwi, and gave Orange the lowest Coverage Experience score (7.8 out of 10, against 9.2 and 9.1). Our comparison of Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi has the national detail.

Why does the network matter so much in Agadir?

Because the fastest operator was far ahead of the average: 235 Mbps against 161 Mbps in May 2026. The gap between the two figures shows how much you gain or lose by being on a particular network:

City (ANRT, 26–28 May 2026)Average download, 3 networksFastest operatorGap
Marrakech168 Mbps243 Mbps75 Mbps
Agadir161 Mbps235 Mbps74 Mbps
Fès138 Mbps193 Mbps55 Mbps
Meknès159 Mbps205 Mbps46 Mbps
Rabat171 Mbps200 Mbps29 Mbps
Casablanca153 Mbps166 Mbps13 Mbps

This matters because many travel eSIMs use one network only. On 1 October 2026, Airalo's page said its Morocco plan "operates on the Orange network", and Nomad's plan data named Orange as its only network. In Agadir, that ties you to the operator rated below average in May 2026. Holafly, Yesim and Orange Travel name all three operators; Ubigi names Maroc Telecom and Orange; eSIM Maroc says the network available in each area is selected automatically.

Casablanca is the opposite case: there the gap was 13 Mbps, and all three networks were level. If your trip combines both cities, our Casablanca eSIM guide and Marrakech eSIM guide give their figures.

Is there 5G in Agadir?

Yes: Morocco launched 5G on 7 November 2025, and Agadir and its neighbouring towns are on Orange's official list. Orange's list of places covered by its 5G, dated 5 November 2025, names Agadir sixth, and in the Souss also Aït Melloul, Dcheira, Inezgane, Drargua, Biougra, Aourir, Tiznit and Taroudant (spelled "Taroudannt"). Essaouira and Guelmim are on it too.

Taghazout and Tamraght are not on the list. Aourir, a town about 12 km from Agadir according to Wikipedia, is. Imsouane, Tafraout and Mirleft are not listed either. A town on the list has at least one covered zone, not necessarily every street, and Maroc Telecom and inwi have published no list of their own.

5G is still the exception nationally: at the end of March 2026 it accounted for 8.4% of mobile internet subscriptions, against 86.8% for 4G. No official source confirms that travel eSIMs get 5G while roaming, so treat it as a bonus. Your phone also needs to support it: our iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26 pages list the details per model.

Does mobile data work in Taghazout and on the surf coast?

On the coast road, yes; at the surf spots themselves, nobody has published a measurement. The ANRT's late-2024 campaign measured the national road from Agadir to Essaouira through Taghazout: the three networks averaged 67 Mbps there, with 77 Mbps for the fastest operator, and all three were rated level. That is close to the 66 Mbps average of the 27 national roads in the campaign.

At the other end of that road, Essaouira averaged 89 Mbps in the same campaign. The figures come from the ANRT's 2024 national report, measured on 4G before 5G arrived.

What the sources do not cover matters as much. No official or independent test covers the beaches and points around Taghazout and Tamraght, Imsouane, or the Paradise Valley inland. On national roads, 97.79% of connection attempts succeeded in 2024, against 99.58% in the cities, so short gaps between villages are more likely than in town.

Two habits help. Download offline maps and tide or surf forecasts before a session, and keep a plan that can use more than one Moroccan network, which gives you a fallback where one operator's mast is out of reach. Indoors, Opensignal notes that the most common dead zones occur inside buildings, so a surf-camp room with thick walls may still need the Wi-Fi.

How good is the signal in the Souss and on day trips?

Good in the towns and on the main roads, according to the ANRT's 2024 tests. The 2024 campaign covered 71 cities, 27 national roads and 6 motorways, including several around Agadir:

Town or route (ANRT, late 2024, 4G)Average download, 3 networksFastest operator
Agadir114 Mbps156 Mbps
Inezgane106 Mbps124 Mbps
Aït Melloul106 Mbps120 Mbps
Taroudant99 Mbps115 Mbps
Essaouira89 Mbps107 Mbps
Tiznit88 Mbps105 Mbps
Agadir–Taroudant road75 Mbps88 Mbps
Rabat–Marrakech–Agadir motorway68 Mbps72 Mbps
Agadir–Essaouira road, via Taghazout67 Mbps77 Mbps
Marrakech–Agadir road62 Mbps68 Mbps
Agadir–Tiznit–Laayoune road56 Mbps71 Mbps

All three operators were rated level on every line of this table in 2024, before the 2026 campaigns showed Orange falling behind in Agadir. The road south through Tiznit towards Laayoune was the slowest route around Agadir, and every figure is still far above the 2 Mbps minimum in the operators' licences.

The gaps are inland and in the mountains. No measurement exists for Tafraout, the Anti-Atlas villages or the Souss-Massa national park, so plan offline maps for those trips. For a drive on to Marrakech or the desert, our Marrakech guide covers the routes the ANRT measured further north and east.

What about Agadir Al Massira airport?

Install your eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. Agadir Al Massira (AGA) handled 3,495,277 passengers in 2025, up 11.07% on 2024, and is Morocco's third-busiest airport after Casablanca Mohammed V and Marrakech Menara, according to ONDA figures reported by Hespress. It lies in the commune of Temsia, about 20 km south-east of Agadir according to Wikipedia.

We found no official list of operator counters at Agadir Al Massira, and a SIM counter also means a queue and passport registration. Our guide to eSIM at Moroccan airports covers counters, passport registration and what to do if the line does not connect on landing. Most plans start at the first connection in Morocco; eSIM Maroc's FAQ says this applies "even if it's a transit at the airport".

Is mobile data faster than hotel Wi-Fi in Agadir?

Usually, yes, although Agadir's best hotels have some of Morocco's fastest Wi-Fi. In Ookla's study of fixed internet and hotel Wi-Fi, Agadir's median fixed download was 23.64 Mbps at the end of 2024, below Rabat (36.55 Mbps), Casablanca (35.57 Mbps) and Marrakech (28.96 Mbps). Maroc Telecom's fixed median in Agadir was over 43 Mbps.

Hotels did better than the city's fixed average. Between August 2023 and February 2025, The View Agadir measured a median of 72.27 Mbps for download and 92.10 Mbps for upload, the fastest of the ten five-star hotels in the study, and the Riu Palace Tikida Agadir 55.72 Mbps. Ookla found that hotels in Agadir and Marrakech averaged around 46 Mbps among its second group, which included a Sofitel-branded hotel in Agadir.

Those hotel figures are still well below the 146 to 161 Mbps mobile averages the ANRT measured in Agadir in 2026. For a video call from a sea-view balcony, a mobile hotspot is frequently the faster option; for a room deep inside a resort, the hotel Wi-Fi may be the better signal.

Which eSIM plan is best value for Agadir?

For a beach week, the cheapest unlimited plans are within a euro or two of each other; for longer surf trips, the Orange Travel promotion costs least, and at 30 days Ubigi also undercuts eSIM Maroc. We read the Morocco pages of seven providers on 1 October 2026, each in the currency it sells in. The table below was checked on 1 October 2026:

Agadir stays tend to run from a week to a month, so here is how the longer lengths compare:

Orange Travel's prices are a promotion valid until 15 November 2026, and it publishes no fair-use figure for its unlimited plans. Yesim charges €37.31 for 10 days and €47 for 15 days; Airalo €41 for 10 days and sells no 15 or 30-day unlimited plan.

Where eSIM Maroc fits

eSIM Maroc is the Morocco specialist linked from this site's menu, and we judge it on the same figures. It sells unlimited plans only, from €6 for 1 day to €79 for 30 days, each with 1 GB a day at full speed and then 512 kbps until the next day.

  • Pros: for 7 to 10 days, cheaper than Holafly, Yesim and Airalo; unlike Nomad and Airalo, which use Orange only, it is not tied to one named operator: it says the network available in each area is selected automatically, although it does not say which operators it uses in Agadir; hotspot on every plan, according to its FAQ; the plan starts at the first connection in Morocco, so it can be installed at home.
  • Cons: Nomad is slightly cheaper for 7 and 10 days (€23.69 and €30.71) and the Orange Travel promotion is cheaper for 10, 15 and 30 days; at 15 days Ubigi costs the same with 30 GB at full speed, and at 30 days Ubigi (€69) and Holafly (€78.90) cost less; 1 GB a day is the lowest allowance of the brands that publish one, short for uploading surf videos every day; no fixed-data plan and no top-up; it does not name its operators.

Verdict for Agadir: eSIM Maroc is a reasonable choice for a 7 to 10-day beach holiday with moderate use, especially if you would rather not be tied to an Orange-only plan, bearing in mind that it does not name the networks it uses. For a month-long surf stay, the Orange Travel promotion or Ubigi cost less; for heavy video uploads, Ubigi's or Airalo's larger full-speed allowances fit better. Our price-per-day comparison covers every length.

How should you choose an eSIM for Agadir?

  • Check the network first. In Agadir, Orange was rated below average for download in May 2026; a plan that names Maroc Telecom or inwi as well avoids being tied to it; a plan that picks the network by area is not tied to Orange either, but does not say which network you will get.
  • Match the plan to your stay. A week, a fortnight and a month each have a different cheapest plan.
  • Look at the full-speed allowance. Our guide to the real daily caps of unlimited Morocco eSIMs explains what happens after the cap.
  • Install before you fly. Our installation guide covers iPhone and Android, and the comparison of Morocco eSIM providers details each brand.
